Greek God Hermes Marble Bust

, ,

Hermes, a marble bust.

In Greek mythology, Hermes was the god of commerce, thieves, travellers, and boundaries. He was also the messenger of the gods and the protector of shepherds and athletes.

Hermes was the son of Zeus and the Pleiad Maia, and was born in a cave on Mount Cyllene. As a child, he showed great intelligence and agility, and was known for his cunning and resourcefulness.

Hermes was often depicted as a young man wearing a winged hat and sandals, and carrying a caduceus, a winged staff with two snakes wrapped around it. He was a skilful thief and had the ability to move quickly and stealthily, which made him a valuable messenger for the gods.

As the god of commerce, Hermes was also responsible for overseeing trade and commerce, and was often worshipped by merchants and traders. He was also a patron of travellers and protected them from harm, and was known to guide lost souls to the underworld.

Hermes was a popular figure in Greek mythology, and his cult was widespread throughout the ancient world. He was also a significant influence on Western culture, particularly in the areas of literature, art, and commerce.
