Paulina Borghese – Marble Statue

, , ,

Paulina Borghese, posing as Venus Victoria. A reproduction of the Antonio Canova Statue.

Paulina Borghese was a prominent member of the Bonaparte family, the sister of Napoleon Bonaparte. She was born on October 20, 1780, in Ajaccio, Corsica, and was one of Napoleon’s favorite siblings.

Paulina was also famous for her portrait sculptures, which were created by the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova. The most famous of these sculptures is the “Venus Victrix,” which depicts Paulina as the Roman goddess Venus, and is now housed in the Galleria Borghese in Rome.

After Napoleon’s fall from power, Paulina moved to Rome, where she lived out the rest of her life in relative obscurity. She died on June 9, 1825, at the age of 44, and was buried in the Borghese family chapel in Rome.
