Plato. Philosopher  A marble bust.

Plato was a renowned ancient Greek philosopher who was born in Athens during the Classical period of Ancient Greece.

He founded the Academy in Athens, a philosophical institution where he taught the principles of Platonism, which later became one of the most influential philosophical doctrines in Western thought.

Plato was a pseudonym derived from his wrestling coach’s nickname for him, possibly alluding to his broad build.

According to Alexander of Miletus, as quoted by Diogenes of Sinope, Plato’s real name was Aristocles, son of Ariston, from the Collytus deme (district) in Athens.
