Marble Statue – Psyche of Capua
Marble Statues, Statues And StatuettesPsyche of Capua, a marble statue.
The Psyche of Capua is a Roman marble sculpture dating from the 1st century BC, created after a lost Hellenistic original attributed to the Greek sculptor Scopas.
The sculpture depicts a young woman, likely a personification of the soul or psyche, who is depicted in a state of deep contemplation or mourning, with her head slightly bowed and her hands clasped in front of her chest.
The sculpture is renowned for its lifelike and emotive qualities, with the artist masterfully capturing the subtle nuances of the figure’s facial expression and body language.
The detailed drapery of her garment, which appears to cling to her form, further emphasises the realism and naturalism of the sculpture.
The Psyche of Capua is considered to be one of the finest examples of Roman sculpture and is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy.
