Baron Schmiedel – Marble Sculpture

, ,

Baron Schmiedel, a bust.

Crafted in 1739, this caricature bust depicts Johann Gottfried Tuscheer, the court jester who was famously known as Baron Schmiedel.

It was commissioned by the Japanese Palace, which was one of the final Royal commissions for Augustus the Strong, the King of Poland (ruled 1694-1733) and the Elector of Saxony.

The bust is a satirical portrait, intended to mock and ridicule Tuscheer’s appearance and personality.

It serves as a reminder of the important role that court jesters played in European courts during the 18th century, entertaining and amusing the nobility while often speaking truth to power through their comedic performances.

The bust is a fascinating historical artifact, offering a glimpse into the world of royal courts and their eccentric inhabitants.

Weight 12kg.
