Madame Du Barry, A marble bust.

Madame du Barry, born as Jeanne Bécu, was the mistress of King Louis XV of France. She was born in Vaucouleurs, France in 1743 and was the illegitimate daughter of a seamstress and possibly a friar.

At the age of 15, Jeanne began working as a seamstress in Paris and soon caught the attention of wealthy men who were willing to support her financially. She eventually caught the eye of Louis XV, who was in need of a new mistress after the death of his previous one.

Louis XV was captivated by Jeanne’s beauty and charm, and she quickly became his official mistress. As the king’s mistress, Jeanne was given a title and a luxurious estate, and she became one of the most powerful and influential women at court.

However, Jeanne’s position was not secure, as she faced opposition from powerful members of the court who were jealous of her influence over the king. In 1774, Louis XV died and was succeeded by his grandson Louis XVI, who had no interest in continuing his grandfather’s relationship with Jeanne.

After Louis XV’s death, Jeanne was arrested and eventually executed by guillotine during the French Revolution in 1793. Despite her tragic end, Madame du Barry remains a fascinating and controversial figure in French history and has been the subject of numerous books, films, and works of art.
