William Shakespeare, a marble bust.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor who is widely considered one of the greatest writers in the English language and the world’s preeminent dramatist.

He was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, a market town in Warwickshire, England. Shakespeare wrote over 38 plays and 150 sonnets during his career, including such famous works as “Romeo and Juliet,” “Hamlet,” “Macbeth,” and “Othello.”

His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare’s works are celebrated for their complexity, depth of characterization, psychological insight, and masterful use of language.

His legacy continues to influence modern literature, film, and theatre.
