Clytie The Water Nymph – Marble Bust

, ,

Clytie, a marble bust.

In Greek mythology, Clytie was a water nymph who was the daughter of the Titan Oceanus and the goddess Tethys. She was one of the many nymphs who served the Greek gods and lived in the natural world, often depicted as a beautiful young woman with long hair.

Clytie is most commonly known for her unrequited love for the sun god Helios. According to the myth, Clytie fell deeply in love with Helios and would watch him as he drove his chariot across the sky every day. However, Helios did not return her affections and instead fell in love with another woman, Leucothoe.

Heartbroken and consumed by jealousy, Clytie spent all her days sitting on the ground, gazing up at the sun without food or drink. Her body eventually became rooted to the ground and she was transformed into a sunflower, forever turning her face towards the sun.

The myth of Clytie and Helios has been a popular subject in art and literature throughout history, and the image of the sunflower turning its head towards the sun is a well-known symbol of unrequited love and devotion.
