Antony was born in Rome to a prominent family, and initially served as a cavalry officer in the Roman army. He rose to prominence as a military commander during the civil war that followed the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE, and became a member of the Second Triumvirate, a ruling coalition that included Octavian (the future Emperor Augustus)

He was the lover of Cleopatra.
