Pericles (born 495 BC, Athens – died 429 BC, Athens) was an Athenian statesman who died in the late 5th century BC.

He played an important role in the overall development of Athenian democracy and the Athenian Empire, making Athens the political and cultural center of Greece.

His accomplishments included beginning construction of the Acropolis in 447.
