Marble Roundel Winter – Thorvaldsen

, ,

The Marble Roundel – Winter is another circular relief sculpture created by Bertel Thorvaldsen, and it is part of a series of four roundels that depict the seasons. The Winter Roundel was created in 1823-1825 and is also on display at the Thorvaldsens Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Winter Roundel depicts a personification of winter, who is often interpreted as the goddess of winter, Chione, in Greek mythology. She is shown wearing a robe and a head covering, with her hair blowing in the wind. In her left hand, she holds a cornucopia, which is a symbol of abundance, while her right hand rests on a tree branch covered in snow and ice.

Size: 70 x 70 x 5 cm. Weight 12kg.
