The beautiful fossil fern display is double sided; each side has a finely detailed fern display. One side has an area of silvery bark which is most noticeable when turned to the light.

On dark grey shale. The ferns are an attractive chalky white and have some superb detail. The white colour occurs as a result of the oxidation and the mineral pyrophyllite. Some also have tinges of orange as a result of pyrite giving rise to this. Some have a shimmering delicate bark when turned to the light. Most of the abandoned coal mines are now difficult to access, and good quality specimens such as these ones are becoming scarcer and much harder to source. Once this is gone, it is gone.
