Lucius Verus, a marble bust.

A fine reproduction of the original work by Canova.

Lucius Verus (130-169 AD) was a Roman emperor who co-ruled with Marcus Aurelius from 161 to 169 AD. He was born Lucius Ceionius Commodus and was later adopted by his uncle, the emperor Antoninus Pius, and took the name Lucius Aelius Aurelius Verus.

Lucius Verus is known for his military campaigns in the east, particularly against the Parthian Empire, which resulted in the capture of their capital, Ctesiphon, and the annexation of several territories. He also played a significant role in the Roman response to the Antonine Plague, which devastated the empire during his reign.

Despite his military successes, Lucius Verus was criticized for his extravagant lifestyle and lack of interest in governance, leaving much of the administration to his advisors. He died in 169 AD, possibly from the plague, and was deified by his co-emperor, Marcus Aurelius.
