Antinous, also known as Antinoös (c. 111 – c. 130), was a young  Greek man from Bithynia and the beloved companion and lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian. Upon his untimely death before reaching the age of twenty, Hadrian declared Antinous a deity, and he was worshipped as both a god and hero throughout the Greek East and Latin West. While little is known about Antinous’s life, it is known that he was born in Claudiopolis, located in present-day Bolu, Turkey, within the Roman province of Bithynia et Pontus. He was likely introduced to Hadrian in 123 and received further education in Italy. By 128, he had become Hadrian’s favorite and accompanied him on a tour of the Roman Empire as part of his personal entourage.

The reason for his death, aged about 20, in around 130 AD, has been the cause of speculation ever since.
