Hercules – Marble Sculpture

, ,

Hercules, a marble sculpture.

In Roman mythology, despite being revered as a defender of the powerless and a great guardian, Hercules encountered personal challenges from the moment of his birth.

Juno dispatched two sorceresses to impede his delivery, but one of Alcmene’s attendants outsmarted them and redirected them to a different location. Undeterred, Juno then dispatched snakes to attack Hercules while he lay in his crib, but he strangled them both with his bare hands.

According to one iteration of the legend, Alcmene left her infant in the forest to safeguard him from Juno’s fury, but the goddess Minerva discovered him and brought him to Juno, claiming he was an abandoned orphan who required sustenance.

Height 61cm. Weight 19kg.
